HELP Haiti

Here is an email that I received from Michael DeVellis, Executive Director of The Powder Group. I thought it was too important and informative not to repost.

By now we have all heard of the devastating situation caused by the earthquake in Haiti. We have also been tweeted and facebooked many times about how we can help. We may also have - in the midst of our feelings of empathy and compassion for those effected by this unimaginable tragedy - felt that we are having a tough enough time ourselves right now and that as much as we'd like to help, we are unfortunately not in a position to do anything given our own personal financial situation right now. We at The Powder Group understand how difficult this year has been financially for so many in our community - artists, brands, educators alike - and have also been working hard just to stay afloat. That said - we hope that each and every one of us can take the time today to consider how lucky we are and how good we have it considering the difficult, insurmountable times that are ahead for the people of Haiti.  We implore each of you in the Global Makeup Community to do whatever you can - as little or as much as that may be - to help the cause and make a difference today. Please keep the money coming!Salvation Army Canada Canadians text "HAITI" to 45678 to donate $5.00 to The Salvation Army's efforts in Haiti from any Rogers Wireless or Bell Mobility phone. Donors will then receive a message asking them to confirm their donation with a YES reply. The proceeds of each text donation will support the ongoing efforts to serve the victims of the recent horrific earthquake that has left thousands dead and many more without adequate food, clean water or shelter.

Haiti Needs Our Help

Of course by now, we have all heard about the devastation in Haiti with the 7.0 earthquake. Grooming Tips By "Marv the Barb":

1.Cleanse your face with a cleanser

2. Apply a hot towel to the face to moisten and relax the bearded areas

3.Massage the face with pre-shaving oil to soften your beard and protect the skin for a smoother shave

4. Apply warm shaving cream to the face

5.Apply razor to the face. Stroke with the grain of hair. If neccessary, relather the face for a second pass. For a perfect shave, always stretch the skin before shaving the bearded area

6.After shaving, apply a warm towel to remove any hair and shave cream residue

7. Apply an after shave lotion or balm to the cleaned shaved areas (Alcohol and grooming products that have alcohol properties are not skin healing. Alcohol dries the skin out. May cause bad irritation and a case of ingrown hairs)

8.Apply a cold towel to close the pores and lock in after shave balm

Note: (Always identify with the skin types before shaving face. If the skin has excessive skin irritation, consult a physician or dermatologist to determine if skin can be shaved)

Many wonder how they can apply their makeup without them looking too made up. I will address this as simply as I can. Makeup should be worn according to your particular taste. To prevent a makeup application from looking too made up, one must apply, blend, and build. Regardless of what you are applying ...........foundation, eyeshadow, blush , or lipstick you need to go through the following:

1) Apply product

2) Blend product and stop to examine to see if the application is to your liking. If not, continue to step 3

3) Build product application by adding more product. After adding more product, go to step 2 and blend. Examine the application again and continue to step 3 if necessary.

Tip:

After traveling from Atlanta and back to my hometown Baltimore for the holidays, I was extremely happy that I traveled with my favorite moisturizer and lip balm, Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer and Rosebud Lip Salve. Baltimore is COLD!!!! Atlanta's temps have been fluctuating, as they normally do. I almost immediately noticed a difference in my skin after a few days of being here. My lips are drier and I find my self craving lip balm. To prevent my skin from getting drier than it already is (which is normal for the season), I apply my lip balm at night before going to bed as well as first thing in the morning after brushing my teeth. I also make sure I apply a little more than normal moisturizer in the morning as well as at night. Remember, the elements on the outside are not our only enemies. We have to take into consideration the heating and air conditioning on the inside of our homes. These too can aid in drying out our skin.

TIP:

When you are in a rush and dont have time for much makeup, always have mascara on hand as well as a pressed powder and a lip gloss. Thats all you need for a basic everyday look. Your mascara (if applied properly) will create a line on your lower lash line (eliminating the need for an eyeliner.

Since working on Stomp The Yard 2, I've come to realize that there are some makeup products that I can't seem to work without when working on a film set. Here they are:
1)Skin Illustrator Dark Flesh tone Palette (I use as a waterproof foundation for those who are heavy sweaters. No touch ups necessary).
2) Skin Illustrator FX palette (great for creating sfx that won't rub off. Again no touch ups necessary).
3) Reel Dark Hair palette(great for covering gray hairs. If you want to create gray hair, try the Silver Reel palette).
4) 99% alcohol (a staple product for film and tv. It activates the makeup in the Skin Illustrator palettes and used in most Sfx work)
5) Illusions Cosmetics Black gel eye liner (A strong black for defining the eyes. Its also waterproof. Once applied, it doesn't rub off).
6) Lorac Brow wax in Brunette ( a personal favorite. It fills in eye brows with color as well as tame them with its gel).
Of course this list could be longer, but these products are my definite 'must haves'.

Although we discussed darkening of armpits before, I would like to address it again to hopefully calm some of the concerns expressed in reference to this issue.

TIP:
To prevent darkening of armpits, please make sure that your armpits are clean each night before going to bed. (1) Clean the armpits of any deodarant and antiperspirants. When getting rid of unwanted hair, (2) try using depilatory creams. Depilatory creams will not traumatize the skin the way that shaving, waxing, and the laser will. Traumatizing the skin follicles causes the darkening of the skin.

I was excited to receive the new YSL Parisienne fragrance in the mail. I wasn't as excited when I tried it on my skin. The rose scent was very nice, but it didn't last all day. Not only that, the rose scent did not smell as nice as it started to fade away. When it comes to fragrance, I tend to like vanilla and more subtle fragrances. To control oil, you must first take a look at your skin care.

Make sure that you are using a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer for oily skin. You may also want to try exfoliating your skin at least 2 times per week. On a daily basis, you can try using a mattifying gel to wear under your makeup or alone on the skin.

L'Oreal Paris Extra-Volume Collagen Mascara

When I received this product, I was excited to try it because I've seen the product and promotional photos for the product in the mass retail stores as well as ads in the magazines. The model in the ads had the longest and fullest lashes ever I wanted my lashes to be the same. So, after I tried it, I didn't have lashes like the models' but I was definitely satisfied. The L'Oreal paris Extra Volume Collagen Mascara made my lashes longer and fuller and even a little stronger. It didn't irritate my eyes when wearing my contacts, like some mascaras and eye liners do. L'Oreal Paris Revitalift Deep-Set Wrinkle Repair Eye

I wasn't excited about this product in whole. The am side was fine and it has an SPF 15, so that was great, but the pm side was not moisturizing at all. And to me, that's not good because I believe the moisture is needed at night. And after using it for the required amount of time, I haven't really seen a difference. L'Oreal Paris Body Expertise: Sublime Bronze Luminous Bronzer Self Tanning Lotion

I tested the product where I could. It seemed to work well, but I am not in need of a tan. My body is bronzed naturally. :-) I loved the fresh scent of the bronzer. I did notice that it contains an Alpha Hydroxy Acid, so if wearing, be sure to wear a sunscreen to prevent sunburn. A bronzer is not something that I will continue to use on myself, but I will definitely use it on my clients when the opportunity presents itself. Read more...

Anything from the L'Oreal EverPure Sulfate-Free Color Care system is going to be a winner for me. The UV protect spray has a wonderful fragrance...Rosemary Mint. Its lightweight and refreshing. I love it because it gives my hair added protection and the moisture that it needs to prevent breakage. Two thumbs up!!!

When brow hairs are sparse, brush them in an upward direction with a brow brush. Look to see where they need to be filled in. You can use a brow powder, pencil, or wax.

TIP:
Never use BLACK powder or pencil to fill in your brows. Black is too harsh of a color. If you dont believe this, test it out. Use a black product one day and then try a dark brown the next day.

Its time to clean out your makeup bags. If you have products that are more than a year old, its time to make some changes. Get rid of any mascaras that are older than a month. If you have it longer than a month and it's sitting in your bag or drawer, then you are not using it. If you are not using it, then it's definitely not good. Take inventory and start cleaning house!!!

If you are experiencing 'Cystic acne' please make sure that you are cleansing your face no more than twice a day. Over cleansing may aggravate the acne.

Here are a few preventive measures that you can take in preventing cystic acne:

1) Cleanse your skin properly with the proper products
2) Reduce your stress levels
3) Be careful of any food sensitivities
4) Make sure you understand any prescription drugs that you are taking

One of my actresses on 'Drop Dead Diva' is experiencing 'Cystic Acne', so I thought I would share this tip with you all.
